The Bajra Sandhi Monument is a renowned Bali tourist attraction, but the construction process was challenging. It began in 1981 but was delayed for several years. The monument is located in Niti Mandala, Renon, Denpasar, which is home to the majority of the government offices. It stands majestically in the middle of a grassy field that is typically utilized by the public for sports such as running, soccer, and basketball in the early morning or evening, and is always bustling with activity on Sunday mornings.

How to Get to Bajra Sandhi Monument

The Bajra Sandhi Monument is conveniently located on a key road in the heart of Renon Square, also known as Puputan Renon. It is accessible by cab or scooter, however many visitors prefer to see the monument as part of the Denpasar Heritage City Tour. If you are traveling from Sanur, it only takes 15 minutes by automobile to cover the 2.5-kilometer distance. However, if you are traveling from Kuta or Seminyak, the journey will take 30 minutes by car and cover 15 kilometers.

Bajra Sandhi Monument’s History

The Bajra Sandhi Monument was built in 1987 and officially opened in 2003. It consists of 33 dioramas depicting the journey history of Bali Island from prehistory (300.000 S.M.) to the period of filling the independence (1950-1975) when Bali Island was built in all areas such as politics, economics, and social culture. Knowing and grasping the trip history, soul, and spirit of Bali People, which struggle from time to time, is predicted to promote Bali tourism.

The monument’s design is deeply rooted in Hindu philosophy, particularly the concept of the Yoni colossus. The structure symbolizes creation and regeneration, central themes in Hinduism. Additionally, the monument narrates the story of Mandhara Giri being twirled in the Ksirarnawa, as described in the Adi Parwa, a sacred Hindu text.

This symbolism is based on two key philosophical principles. The first represents Hinduism, with depictions of Yoni, a feminine symbol of creation. second retells the story of Mount Mandara in the milky ocean (Ksirarnawa), a crucial episode from the Mahabharata, the ancient Indian epic.

The story goes that gods and giants banded together to “twist” Mount Mandara in the Ksirarnawa, hoping to extract the holy Water of Eternity (Tirta Amerta). Other symbols on the monument commemorate the date the Japanese surrendered, August 17, 1945. These include the 17 major gates, eight pillars, and the monument’s 45-meter (148-foot) height. Climb the stairs to the top of the tower to access the chamber with a 360-degree outlook. The exhibition room features rotating displays, which frequently include pictures and paintings.

The paintings’ themes are participatory, imaginative, and educational about Balinese culture, such as Ogoh-ogoh (a Balinese parade before Silent Day) and Balinese customs, such as “metajen” (cockfighting). There are also Borobudur temple paintings and Komodo murals, which depict uncommon animals. Cartoons have also become a popular subject at IAM BALI 3D Museum Bali, as children like seeing and photographing them.
