Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest

Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest is one of Bali’s most prominent tourist attractions, situated in Kutuh Village, Marga District, Tabanan. It is located about 25 kilometers northeast of Denpasar and 4.5 kilometers from Tabanan Regency’s center. Alas Kedaton should be part of Mengwi, but the Tabanan royal family holds more power over the temple in this forest.

Uniqueness of Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest

The name “Alas Kedaton” is derived from the terms “alas,” meaning forest, and “kedaton,” meaning kingdom. This woodland is home to Pura Dalem Kahyangan Kedaton, a sacred temple that serves as the tourist complex’s focal point. The pathways encircling the moss-covered temple walls provide a nice walking experience. The temple gates are usually closed except during religious activities, but visitors can still see inside through the shoulder-high walls.

Beauty and Wildlife of Alas Kedaton

The temple holds a piodalan rite every 210 days on Anggara Kasih Tuesday, according to the Balinese Pawukon calendar. This ceremony lasts an entire day and ends before sundown. Unlike most other Balinese rites, this ritual does not include the use of fire or penjor (decorative bamboo poles).

However, Kedaton is more than simply a temple; it is also home to hundreds of long-tailed macaques, which the locals revere. These monkeys are known to be friendly and frequently engage with tourists. They roam freely about the temple courtyard, jumping on walls and even playing in the little ponds nearby.

In addition to monkeys, the forest is home to huge flying foxes, who are frequently seen soaring through the treetops. At least 24 different varieties of forest plants have been discovered in this area, giving it a diverse ecology worth studying.
