Bali Botanical Garden was founded in 1958 when a prominent Balinese official suggested that the department now known as the Centre Biological Research and Development within the Indonesia center of Sciences explore constructing a botanic garden that would serve as both a research center and a recreational park. Prof. Dr. Kusnoto Setiodiwiriyo, the director, chose a place on 50 hectares of government-owned reforested land. On July 15, 1959, Bali Botanical Garden was formally established on the slopes of Tapak hill in Candikuning village, at an elevation of 1250-1400 meters above sea level.

The Bali Botanical Garden was founded as a collection of conifer (non-flowering seed plants or gymnosperm) species from throughout the world, as well as a recreational area. It was also equipped for scientific, cultural, and technical activities. Development ceased in 1965 due to the insecurity of the time. It wasn’t until 1970 that the garden started to be gradually restored. The restoration was finished on April 30, 1976, and the area was enlarged to 129.2 ha, with the function broadened from largely a conifer collection to include ex-situ conservation of plants from high altitude seasonally wet dry environments in eastern Indonesia.

In 1998, the Bali Botanical Garden comprised 154.5 hectares and housed around 16,000 plants, including over 1500 species from 320 genera and 155 families. Orchids, ceremonial plants, medicinal plants, cacti, ferns, bamboos, and trees are among the specialty collections.
